I am going to give you one of the biggest secrets of a persuasive speech.
Imagine a car with only one speed level-
How monotonous and tedious for the driver and for the passengers as well.
How often have you seen a baseball pitcher changing the speed of the ball?
How often have you seen a cricket bowler altering the pace of the ball?
How often have you seen a tennis player exploiting the change of pace in his serve?
Imagine you are dining in a fancy restaurant
where a live band is playing. The speed of the composition which is playing is either increased or decreased to a marked degree. What happens then? It grabs your attention at once? Does'nt it?
All the examples mentioned above have one thing in common…
Speed, Tempo, and Pace. They all result in a change of pace which produces emphasis.
Do you see the power of a change of tempo?
Why must you not see its power in speech? When you deliver a speech at the same rate of speed, you are depriving yourself of the means of emphasis and power.
Do you understand the reason for a change of pace in your speech?
It is to grab the attention of your audience. Any big change of tempo is emphatic and will catch the attention of the listeners.
This same natural law will transform an insipid speech
into a persuasive presentation. If you want to drive home a point to your audience, make an unforeseen change of pace, and your audience will be left with no other choice but to pay attention to your persuasive style.
However, there is a caveat
Your thoughts should regulate your change of pace. It does not matter which part of the string of words you slow down at, or at which part of your speech you gain momentum. But if you are aware of your thoughts, you will automatically alter pace at the right place. How ever, the thing to remember is the importance of change itself.
Caveat no. 2
Be prudent in modulating your tempo. Do not make your movement too fast. Amateurs are usually victims of this folly. Tempo, like a healthy diet, is best when balanced. Add this technique to your speech and witness before your eyes the power of your persuasive speech.
